From piloting a circular system for plastics to establishing an integrative and improved waste management system

Aviral – The Journey Continues

Project Aviral started as a pilot in Haridwar and Rishikesh to test and enhance holistic waste management practices in these two cities in December 2019. Aviral was implemented by the German development agency GIZ and funded by the Alliance to End Plastic Waste (Alliance) with the objective to reduce plastic waste entering the environment. Since its launch, the project continued to achieve milestones through establishing integrative and improved waste management systems. One of the biggest achievements of the project is the establishment of Uttarakhand’s one-of-a-kind and the first Material Recovery Centre (MRF)in Haridwar. This stand-alone MRF sorts upto 5 tonnes of dry wastes, valorises most plastic into re-usable products with an average operation time of 10 hours per day

As of July 2023, Aviral is owned by the Haridwar Nagar Nigam and it continues to reduce plastic waste from entering the Ganga.
